The simple soap stone camel is hand carved according to ancient Chinese traditions, yet has a distinctly modern style. These chop stick or brush rests were carved in the 1970s just as China was emerging from the Cultural Revolution and re-entering the world stage. The aesthetic is somewhat austere and can be interpreted as a cross section of Chinese thought. On the one hand, the camel represents some of China's most ancient history. Camels once moved trade, technology and ideas along the famed 'Silk Road' that literally connected China to the rest of the world. Yet the severe style with minimal embellishment is very representative of 20th century communist arts. Most Asian arts attempt a duality of presentation, showing the balance of Yin and Yang. The duality of history and style exhibited by these soap stone rests was likely unintentional, but is clearly present as a historical relic. These are limited in quantity, approximately 30 years old and make a wonderful gift for artists, curio collectors or your own dinning room table.
